Potty Training a 12 Week Old Puppy: The Schedule That Finally Worked for Us

Short answer: take a 12 week old puppy out after every sleep, meal, and play session, plus on a timer every couple of hours while awake, and praise the second they finish outside. Write it down so the whole household follows the same schedule.

How often should a 12 week old puppy go out?

More than you think. The AKC's guide on how to potty train a puppy recommends a regular schedule and frequent trips, especially after waking, eating, and playing. We set a phone timer and went out even when she seemed fine. Most accidents happened when we skipped one.

What does a daily schedule for a 12 week old puppy look like?

Ours looked roughly like this. Adjust for your puppy and your vet's feeding advice.

  • 6:30 wake, straight outside
  • 7:00 breakfast, out again 10 to 20 minutes later
  • Play, then out, then a nap in the crate or pen
  • Out the moment she wakes
  • Repeat the meal, play, nap pattern for lunch and dinner
  • Last water a while before bed, final trip right before lights out
  • One quiet night trip if needed

Why is my puppy not potty training?

Usually it is the schedule, not the puppy. Gaps that are too long, free roaming with no supervision, or different people doing different things. The Humane Society's housetraining guide has a useful section on supervision and confinement. We fixed most of our problems by shrinking her space and keeping a simple log.

What should I do after an accident?

Clean it thoroughly so the smell does not invite a repeat, and do not scold. Just note the time. After a few days the log shows a pattern, like accidents always happening 40 minutes after dinner, and you can add a trip there.

How long does potty training take?

It varies a lot. Some puppies click in a few weeks; others take months, and regression around 4 to 6 months is common. If accidents suddenly increase, or you see straining or other changes, call your vet rather than assuming it is a training issue.

Is there a printable version?

I wrote up a longer puppy potty training schedule by age with versions for 8, 10, 12 and 16 weeks. It is free to read. Print it, tape it to the fridge, and cross things off.

If this helped, try the timer trick for three days and see what your log says. Send it to whoever shares puppy duty with you. And there are more first-months guides at Love My Puppy if you want them later.
